D3 Tool Steel: Abrasive Wear and Chipping
D3 is a cold-work tool-steel designation; BÖHLER lists K100 with an approximate D3 cross-reference. Material reference.
Abrasive Wear and Chipping
For a blanking or wear tool, decide whether abrasive wear or edge chipping governs service life. A wear-focused grade can still fail early if the edge is unsupported. Do not transfer the proprietary K100 supply condition or test results to every product sold as D3.
Manufacturing and acceptance checks
Provide the work material, edge geometry, section and target hardness. Ask for the supplier's own hardening and tempering procedure and agree grinding allowances. Inspect edge integrity after finishing and document tool-life trials with both wear measurements and any chipping observed.
