Aluminum 7050: Thick Plate and Directional Properties

7050 is a heat-treatable aluminium alloy in the 7xxx family. Material reference.

Thick Plate and Directional Properties

For a highly loaded machined part, start with the specified temper, plate thickness and grain orientation. Do not compare a generic 7050 strength number with a different alloy's thin-sheet value. Machining a large pocket also requires a plan for dimensional movement and remaining wall thickness.

Manufacturing and acceptance checks

State the material specification, temper and test directions. Ask for stock traceability and any required ultrasonic inspection. Agree roughing and finishing stages, and inspect the finished datums after the part is released from the machining fixture. Evaluate substitutions against the complete design requirement.
