A36: Structural Plate and Machined Bases
ASTM A36 is a structural-steel specification, rather than a promise of one exact chemistry for every product. Material reference.
Structural Plate and Machined Bases
For a welded base, separate structural acceptance from the flatness needed after machining. Buying a plate by grade alone does not settle residual-stress movement, finish allowance or the inspection condition of a fabricated assembly. Avoid treating A36 as an automatic equivalent to every Q235 product.
Manufacturing and acceptance checks
Include plate thickness, the applicable specification edition, weldment sequence and final datum scheme. Agree when stress-relief or other stabilization is needed and when flatness is measured. Request the mill certificate and specify which dimensions are accepted before and after final machining.
