Resolving an Ambiguous A3 Callout

Before evaluating wear resistance or a replacement, obtain the drawing's original material specification and the stock supplier's proposed designation. Do not order a low-carbon structural material against an A3 tool-steel drawing, or infer equivalence from an abbreviated online grade table.

Manufacturing and acceptance checks

Ask for a complete material certificate and the intended heat-treatment response. Record the tooling operation, section size, final hardness and acceptable distortion. If the requested stock cannot be sourced, submit the proposed alternative with a documented comparison before cutting the tool blank.
