8620 Steel: Carburized Gears and Pins
8620 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel commonly specified for case-hardening work. Material reference.
Carburized Gears and Pins
Define a hard wearing surface separately from the core needed to support it. For a carburized pin, the final grinding allowance matters because it changes the remaining case; for a gear, distortion can change the finishing route and inspection cost.
Manufacturing and acceptance checks
Put effective case depth, core requirements and final surface hardness on the enquiry. Identify masking, thread protection and the stage at which case depth is measured. If 9310 is proposed, require a technical comparison for the same geometry and load before changing the grade.
