1010 Steel: Forming, Stock Condition and Purchasing
1010 is a low-carbon steel designation, associated with approximately 0.10% carbon. For cold-rolled sheet and strip, specify temper, thickness and the required forming operation together.
Mead Metals describes 1008/1010 cold-rolled products for forming applications and lists several tempers. These are product-specific choices, not evidence that every item sold as 1010 has identical mechanical properties. Source: Mead Metals product information.
Start with the operation that controls the part
For a formed component, put the proposed bend, draw or stamping operation in the enquiry. Include the drawing revision, sheet thickness, critical radii and acceptable appearance. Ask the stock supplier to identify the offered grade and temper rather than approving an unspecified mild-steel substitution.
Mead Metals identifies brackets, appliance housings and electrical enclosures among applications for cold-rolled 1008/1010 products. Those examples identify candidate uses; they do not establish the suitability of a particular drawing. Source: Mead Metals application guide.
For a machined part, specify bar or other stock form separately. A sheet supplier's forming guidance should not be reused as a bar machining specification. Submit the geometry for a CNC machining review before agreeing the route.
Which properties should the order control?
| Requirement | What to request |
|---|---|
| Material identity | Governing product specification and edition, grade, and a certificate linking stock to its heat or lot. |
| Supply condition | Product form and temper or processing condition, rather than an implicit supplier choice. |
| Forming acceptance | Proposed operation, acceptable surface condition and agreed trial or first-article criteria. |
| Mechanical acceptance | Required test, specimen basis and acceptance range when strength, hardness or ductility is specified. |
| Dimensions and finish | Stock section tolerance, burr limits, cosmetic faces, finish specification and inspection stage. |
This guide does not assign one yield strength or hardness to all 1010 products. Put a required property into the purchasing agreement and use data for the actual supply condition. A typical value from an unrelated stock form is not an acceptance limit.
1010 versus 1020: compare the purchase specification
The nominal carbon content associated with 1010 is lower than that associated with 1020. This identifies a chemistry difference; it does not prove that an offered lot meets a forming or strength requirement. Compare the same product form and condition. 1010 reference; 1020 reference.
- If the drawing calls for 1010, require approval before substituting 1020.
- If forming is the priority, compare the offered temper and forming acceptance, not just grade labels.
- For a bar-machined part, review the 1020 machining and specification guide alongside the actual stock offers.
A useful 1010 request for quotation
- Attach the controlled drawing and identify the grade and governing product specification.
- State stock form, thickness or diameter, condition, quantity and repeat-order expectations.
- Mark features that control fit, forming success and appearance.
- List finishing, packaging and certificate requirements.
- Require written approval for material substitutions or changes to the accepted condition.
For example, an enquiry might request 1010 to the drawing's product specification, with stock form and temper to be confirmed before release and marked dimensions inspected after finishing. Resolve those open items before placing the production order.
Common purchasing questions
Does 1010 mean a particular sheet temper?
No. The supplier's 1008/1010 range includes multiple tempers. State the condition required for the operation.
Is 1010 automatically interchangeable with 1020?
No. Treat substitution as a drawing and procurement change. Compare specifications and obtain design approval.
What should be sent for manufacturing review?
Provide the model and drawing, requested condition, quantities, finishing and acceptance criteria. Request a manufacturing quote with those details.
